BMW has spent the better part of the last decade chasing numbers.
More horsepower.
More grip.
More tech.
More complexity.
They’re not alone - the modern performance car arms race has become fairly predictable: add boost, add all-wheel drive, add weight, repeat. Then we all get excited at the news of a new model, as if we didn’t already know exactly what it was going to be!
That’s why the new BMW M3 CS feels so refreshing.
Not because it’s the fastest M3 ever built. It isn’t. Not because it dominates a spec sheet. It doesn’t. And that’s exactly the point.
BMW actually showed restraint.
They made decisions that lead us to believe they were thinking about us, the enthusiasts.
For context, never has the CS trim not been produced with more horsepower than its underlying base M sibling. In fact, the CS typically sits above the high-hp competition spec.
10-50 additional hp is the typical low-hanging fruit they’ve always plucked to keep the marketers happy….until now!
The biggest headline is simple: manual transmission only. In 2026, that alone feels borderline rebellious. Most manufacturers have treated the manual gearbox like an outdated inconvenience, something to quietly phase out in pursuit of tenths of a second and better launch control statistics. BMW could have easily followed that path completely.
They didn’t.
And there’s a cost to doing that.
To make the manual work, BMW reportedly had to use the standard M3 engine tune rather than the higher-output from the M3 Competition. That means sacrificing horsepower — the very thing the industry has been addicted to for years.
In an era where every new performance car announcement sounds like a dyno competition, BMW willingly stepped backward on paper to move forward behind the wheel.
That decision says a lot.
Enthusiasts have been arguing for years that modern performance cars crossed a line somewhere along the way. Cars became so fast, so capable, and so digitally assisted that the experience itself started to feel distant.
The formula for this M3 CS goes directly against that trend.
Rear-wheel drive only.
Manual only.
Less power.
Those choices would have sounded insane in a product planning meeting ten years ago. Today, they sound almost courageous.
Because the truth is, we don’t need 700 horsepower and AWD to enjoy a car. What enthusiasts crave is involvement.
We want a responsive car that demands timing, precision, and participation.
We want to feel responsible for the experience rather than simply managing a series of electronic systems designed to maximize acceleration.
The irony is that this “less is more” philosophy is exactly what made older BMW M cars legendary in the first place.
While they were no slouches, cars like the BMW E46 M3 and BMW E39 M5 weren’t celebrated because they overwhelmed people with numbers.
They were celebrated because they felt alive.
They were fizzy.
They balanced performance with engagement.
They rewarded skill.
They made ordinary drives memorable.
Am I ready to trade my E46 M3 for this new M3 CS? Maybe not.
Am I suddenly feeling somewhat hopeful that maybe someone out there is listening?
Yes!
BMW didn’t build this car to win a spreadsheet battle. They built it for the people who still care about driving enjoyment.
While there remains a long way to go, this feels like a step in the right direction for the entire industry.
I hope it’s a start of things to come.
